Investigating EFL Students' Perceptions of Small Group Discussion as a Motivational Strategy in a Public Speaking Course: a Qualitative Study at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta
Abstract
Small Group Discussion's contribution to facilitating EFL students’ speaking activities at several levels of education has been positive. This study investigates EFL students’ perceptions of motivational speaking during small group discussions in a UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta public speaking course. The research aims to understand what motivational factors influence students during class and how small group discussions influence the student's performance. Employing a qualitative method, the study selected ten UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta students who have taken the course in their 4th semester. The findings reveal that motivation is important in enhancing students' participation and performance; both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors are identified. This was followed by a small group discussion strategy that was found to be particularly effective in fostering motivation and improving speaking skills.
